Free Listings Are How Google (and ChatGPT) Find Your Products. Here's What Actually Qualifies.
The Free Channel Most Merchants Under-Invest In
Free listings are Google's unpaid product results - the Shopping units that can appear in Search and on the Shopping tab without a Shopping ads budget. They are not a separate product from your Merchant Center feed. They are the same product data, serving a free destination, subject to the same product data specification Google publishes for ads and listings alike.
That matters more in 2026 than the average Shopify merchant is being told. In March 2026, Peec AI's research - which we covered in our AI traffic honesty post - found that roughly 83% of ChatGPT shopping carousel products were strong matches to Google's top 40 organic shopping results. Paid ads were excluded from that analysis. The pipeline reads organic Shopping.
So the sequence is not "optimise for ChatGPT, then maybe fix Merchant Center." It is: get eligible, accurate products into Google's free and organic Shopping surfaces, and every downstream reader of those surfaces - including the leading AI shopping carousel - has something clean to match against. Free listings are not a side quest. They are the eligibility layer.
What Google Requires Before a Product Can Show
Google's free-listings documentation is blunt: most of the following attributes are required for products to show for free on Google. Missing a required attribute is not a soft quality ding. It is a serve blocker.
For every product, plan on submitting at minimum:
id - a stable unique identifier in your feed.
title - the product title (1-150 characters per the title attribute rules).
description - a real description, not an empty string or a SKU code.
link - the landing page URL shoppers will hit.
image_link - a qualifying product image.
price - the price Google will show and verify.
availability - in stock, out of stock, preorder, and so on.
For most products you also need brand, plus a unique product identifier - typically gtin, or mpn with brand when GTIN does not apply. Apparel and similar categories add variant-identifying attributes such as color, size, age_group, and gender. Condition is required when the item is used or refurbished.
On Shopify, these fields map to a mix of product title, description, featured image, variant price/inventory, vendor, barcode/SKU, and option names - plus whatever your Google channel or feed app transforms before upload. The transformation layer is where many stores silently drop required attributes. If Merchant Center never receives brand or GTIN, it does not matter that the data "exists somewhere" in Admin.
Google's own quality guidance is consistent with this: submit every required attribute that applies, and as many recommended attributes as you can, because richer attributes increase the chance of matching the right queries. Completeness is not a vibe. It is the spec.
The Match Rule That Kills More Listings Than Thin Copy
The failure mode we see discussed least in this category - and the one Google documents most clearly - is mismatch. Price, availability, and product details in the feed must match what a shopper sees on the landing page. If the feed says £49.00 and in stock, and the page briefly renders £59.00, a crossed-out price, or sold out, you are volunteering for disapproval.
This is why "rewrite the description for AI" can be the wrong first task. A lyrical, citation-ready description on a page whose feed price is stale still fails the free-listings gate. Google's high-quality data guidance tells merchants to keep price and availability current, to sync promptly after catalogue changes, and - for advanced setups - to push near-real-time updates through the Merchant API. Daily freshness is the practical floor for most Shopify stores; same-day price promotions without a feed update are how good catalogues earn bad Diagnostics.
Treat feed-vs-storefront drift as its own workstream. Catalogue copy quality and feed accuracy are related. They are not the same job.
Diagnostics Is the Real Dashboard
Merchant Center's Diagnostics view is where free listings are won or lost. Google reviews submitted items against the specification and against what it finds on your pages. Products that fail can be disapproved and stop appearing in Shopping ads and free listings. Unresolved data-quality issues can escalate from product-level problems to account-level warnings, and - if ignored through the warning period - to suspension of the affected feed's ability to serve.
That is the operational reality behind every glossy "get into AI shopping" checklist. If Diagnostics is red, the AI conversation is premature.
A useful weekly habit for a Shopify merchant:
1. Open Diagnostics and separate account issues from item issues.
2. Sort item issues by affected count - fix the attributes that block the most SKUs first.
3. Sample ten disapproved products and compare feed values to the live PDP: price, availability, title, image, brand/GTIN.
4. If you are in a warning period, resolve the listed issues and request review rather than waiting it out.
5. Only after the serve blockers clear, invest in title quality, attribute richness, and on-page catalogue depth.
Geopad does not replace Merchant Center Diagnostics. We audit and improve the Shopify catalogue fields that become feed inputs - titles, descriptions, alt text, duplicates, structure, identifier-ready fields - so the source Google reads is cleaner. The disapproval queue still lives in Google.
What Free Listings Do Not Promise
A short list of claims this topic attracts, and why we will not make them.
"Free listings guarantee Shopping rank." Eligibility is not ranking. Meeting the specification gets you into the pool. Position still depends on relevance, competitiveness, landing-page experience, and a long list of factors outside any single catalogue app.
"Schema markup alone fixes feed disapprovals." JSON-LD on the storefront and attributes in Merchant Center are related signals, not substitutes. We wrote a full Shopify structured data guide because schema matters for rich results and machine readability - but a perfect Product object on the page will not clear a missing gtin in the feed.
"Fix free listings and ChatGPT will show your products." The Peec study supports a strong eligibility story: ChatGPT's carousel heavily overlaps organic Google Shopping. It does not support a promise. Off-catalogue factors - reviews, price, availability against competitors, third-party mentions - still decide outcomes. Catalogue and feed work buy you a ticket. They do not print the result.
"You need Shopping ads for free listings to work." Free listings are specifically the unpaid destination. Ads can amplify. They are not the admission requirement Google documents for free serving.
A One-Hour Shopify Free-Listings Audit
If you want a concrete pass you can run this week:
Minutes 0-10 - Diagnostics triage. Export or list the top disapproval reasons by SKU count. Translate each into a catalogue field (missing brand, bad GTIN, image policy, price mismatch, unavailable landing page).
Minutes 10-25 - Required-attribute sample. Pull 20 products across your best-sellers and a random slice. For each, confirm feed (or Google channel preview) has id, title, description, link, image, price, availability, brand, and GTIN/MPN as applicable. Apparel: confirm color/size/age/gender.
Minutes 25-40 - Match check. Open the live PDP for those 20. Confirm price and availability match the feed at load time - not after a delay, not only for logged-in users, not only on desktop.
Minutes 40-50 - Image and title hygiene. Flag promotional overlays, watermarks, and titles stuffed with "Free shipping" / sale language - common policy and quality problems in Shopping surfaces. (Shopping title rewrite method ships as the next post in this series.)
Minutes 50-60 - Catalogue depth where it compounds. For products that already clear eligibility, fix thin descriptions, missing alt text, and duplicate titles - the same work Geopad's 13 checks score on the Shopify side. Eligibility first, enrichment second.
That ordering is the whole post in one line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to run Shopping ads to get free listings? No. Free listings are an unpaid destination that uses your Merchant Center product data. Ads are optional amplification, not the gate Google documents for free serving.
Does Shopify sync everything to Merchant Center automatically? Shopify's Google channel and related apps can sync a large share of product data, but "synced" is not the same as "valid." Required attributes can be missing, transformed incorrectly, or mismatched against the live page. Diagnostics is the source of truth, not the presence of a connected app.
Will cleaning up free listings get my products into ChatGPT carousels? It improves the eligibility path the Peec research implies - organic Google Shopping presence - but nobody can honestly guarantee carousel placement. Treat it as necessary groundwork, not a purchased outcome.
What is the single highest-leverage fix if Diagnostics is a mess? Usually price/availability match and missing identifiers (brand/GTIN), because both are hard serve requirements. Beautiful description rewrites come after the product can show at all.
Does Geopad submit my feed to Google? No. Geopad audits and helps fix catalogue quality in Shopify. Merchant Center, your Google channel, or your feed tool still owns submission, Diagnostics, and listing status. We would rather draw that boundary clearly than pretend one dashboard does both jobs.
Geopad audits the catalogue fields free listings and Shopping both read - titles, descriptions, duplicates, alt text, structure - with every finding severity-ranked and nothing published without your approval. Merchant Center Diagnostics still belongs in Google; we clean the source it pulls from.
